 Definition

Instant messaging, often shortened to IM or IM'ing, is the exchange of near real-time messages through a stand-alone application or embedded software. Unlike chat rooms with thousand of users engaging in multiple and overlapping conversations, IM sessions usually held between two users in a private, back-and-forth style of communication.

                                      Roles of instant messenger

  • communication barriers like spatial and temporal in which people often encounter when face-to-face communication takes place can be fixed. 

  • instant messenger has a provision for interaction at a convenient time and place without having to depend on a specific computer and laptop as you can do it in cyber café, computer lab or at a restaurant or even when you are travelling. 

  • In some context, there are complex situation that is easier verbally than to type. One of the  IM roles is to provide voice messages that capable to reduce the formality without restrictions which then facilitates the maintenance of relationship.

  • IM also helpful in term of quick change in the information and clarification on a urgent matter. For instance, a change of time for a meeting can be done quickly and the latest update or amendments on a important information can be done faster and efficiently. 

  • Additionally, the students and teacher or lecturers are possible to become tech savvy . This helps in term of exploration of technology which then assist them in future endeavors and career life.
